At the kind invitation of the Mayor of Ipswich Jane Riley (and her consort), Suffolk Law Centre’s band of volunteers went to tea in the Mayor’s Parlour on 7th May. Carole, Rosemary, Julie, Swathi, Jack, Samuel and Paul were joined by full time staff members Audrey, Sophie and Sumaiyah for an impressive spread of sandwiches, cakes and fruit salad. SLC has been the Mayor’s chosen charity for her year in office and it was wonderful to see and hear her support for the work we all do.
After tea Andrew Beal, the Town Sergeant, explained the historical background to a number of the artefacts on display in the cabinets. The maces and ceremonial sword were passed around those present – Jack’s impression of the Elven King with sword sticks in the memory as does Julie’s Heseltine-esque swinging of the mace! All the volunteers enjoyed the experience which was both interesting and fun.
