ISCRE have collaborated with Tisrespect and Creator Studio to create the Rules of Engagement Project.
Rules of Engagement aims to facilitate discussions and improve relationships between BAME young people and the police. The project is youth led, allowing young people to communicate their feelings directly. It aims to breakdown perceptions and misconceptions and challenge narratives between these two groups.
This project comes at a crucial time. Young people from BAME backgrounds in Suffolk are becoming marginalised due to fear of drug and knife crime and the difficulty to access social spaces such as parks and negative interaction with authorities.
Moreover, as young people spend increasing amounts of time in the digital world, it has become a challenge for the police reach them and have meaningful engagement both face-to-face and online.
Additionally, young people under 18 years in Ipswich are 3 times more likely to engage with the police during stop and search than their older counterparts and Black, Asian and minority ethnic young people are 2.7 times more likely to be stopped and searched than their White counterparts.
