At 10 am on my first day at ISCRE, I arrived at reception where I was warmly greeted by Sarah, the receptionist. She took me into a room where a few of my classmates from the University of Essex were already seated waiting for our new supervisor Audrey, Director of Legal Services at ISCRE. After Audrey welcomed us into her office, she gave us an informal introduction to ISCRE which made us feel at home in what was to be our new work placement setting for the next few months.
We were then introduced to the rest of the ISCRE team who we have now come to know very well and admire through our time here. The incredibly high number of student volunteers ISCRE takes on is a testament to their contribution to educating young, aspiring individuals who are eager to learn. During my time at ISCRE, someone was always willing to help me if I didn’t understand something.
Unlike many law firms where students may only be given simple administrative tasks such as filing or photocopying, ISCRE is different. By the same afternoon on my first day, I was thrown into real life case work which is always a bit daunting but nevertheless exciting. One of the great things about ISCRE is that no day, week or month is the same. Although all the cases relate to discrimination, each one is significantly different. I have had the opportunity to work and experience the law in practice in a variety of situations which range from filling out employment tribunal forms to attending consultation meetings to improve access for those with disabilities.
All these experiences have really helped me to link my academic studies with real life casework. Understanding the practical application of the law has been the most valuable skill ISCRE has given me and this will surely help me in deciding my future career. The social events were another highlight and they gave me an insight into the work/life balance of a lawyer. I particularly enjoyed the Annual General Meeting for the Ipswich Citizens Advice Bureau. This was a brilliant experience and a great opportunity to boost my social networking skills. I have loved my time at ISCRE, the staff and clients are truly one of kind. I would recommend the work placement scheme to anyone who wants an insightful and thought provoking experience in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
